The Sindyanna Work Team Makes a Study Tour in the Haifa Harbor
February 22, 2005
Sindyanna of Galilee decided to requite its workers with something pleasant after they had finished packing an especially large shipment for Oxfam in Belgium.
On February 22 we made a trip to Haifa harbor, where we were received by William Jahshan of Flying Cargo, the Israeli franchisee of FedEx.
The women visited the piers, watched the cranes as they loaded and unloaded cargoes, and heard an interesting explanation about the nitty-gritty of import and export. We also visited the harbor warehouse of Overseas Commerce, where goods such as our olive oil and soap are placed in the big containers, which then are shifted to the port. Most of Sindyanna's products pass through this and other nearby warehouses.
The visit offered the women a fine opportunity to see, close up, a stage in the process that begins in the olive groves, moves through their hands in the plant at Majd al-Krum, and then to the holds of ships that will take the goods to Europe, America, Japan and Australia. Next, they said, we want to visit those lands - and who knows, maybe we'll meet the shops and customers... We too are part of the world.
