Sindyanna of Galilee has a New Partner

(Published in Challenge magazine - May-June 2008)

Hadas Lahav, Director of Sindyanna, recently took part in a symposium of EZA, Austria's largest Fair Trade importer. EZA works with more than 130 Fair Trade producers in some thirty nations, spanning Latin America, Africa and Asia. Its imports are sold in the supermarkets of Austria, in organic-food shops, and in a chain of 120 World Shops.

Managed largely by women, EZA is steadily growing. Its inventory broadens from year to year. Now, for the first time, it has bought Sindyanna's organic oil from Galilean olive groves. The first shipment reached Austria in April.

The symposium, which took place in Salzburg, marked the launching of a new series of organic oils, Sindyanna's among them. About 50 people took part, most of them activists and workers connected to the World Shops. Hadas Lahav lectured on the role of olive oil in the Palestinian economy and on Sindyanna's specific contribution toward strengthening olive cultivation in the Arab sector. She also organized a tasting session for the Sindyanna oil and za'atar (hyssop).

When you find yourself in times of trouble, let it bee

by Eli Ashkenazi (Published in Haaretz newspaper 22.5.06)
Ali Kabha, a high-school teacher and professional apiarist, puts a transparent beehive on the table. His 15 students intently watch what is going on through a glass partition.
"The behavior of the bees is fascinating. Their order, organization, division of labor and the equality between the workers, the cleanliness and the diligence - so many clever attributes in such a tiny creature," says Raniya Akal, one of the students. read all...

Fair Trade in the Service of Art

by Sharon Lior (Published in Challenge magazine no. 97 - May-June 2006)
Sindyanna of Galilee is known for marketing Palestinian products, such as olive oil and baskets, according to the principle of a fair return to producers ("fair trade"). We have recently taken on a new project supporting Palestinian artists who live and work in Israel. The aim is to help them gain exposure by including reproductions of their work with the items we market. read all...

Oiling the wheels of progress:

(an article published in Haaretz newspaper, 24.10.2005)
In the heart of the industrial zone of Kafr Kana, among carpentry shops, workshops, garages and factories, there is a small and quiet space, very different from the sweaty and noisy masculine surroundings. Four women sit in it around a long table with very small glass jars, a pile of dry za'atar (hyssop) leaves and a small scale. They talk quietly among themselves, while putting za'atar leaves into the jars. A few days from now, a shipment of 10,000 jars, weighing 80 grams each, is supposed to be sent to Belgium, and they have to rush. read all...

The Za'atar Express:

(Published in Challenge magazine no. 89 - January-February 2005)
From the hill that overlooks Qaffin we could see how much the area has changed in the last few years. The separation fence, flanked by a dirt road, has changed the topography, not to say the demography, beyond recognition. The fence has robbed 5400 dunams (1350 acres) of the village's olive groves, 60% of its total farmland... read all...

Fruits of the Holy Land

By Tom Price
Much of Israel and the Palestinian territories is still very much agricultural land. The timeless rhythms of rural life carry on here, in some ways little changed since the time of Christ. http://crs.org/jerusalem/olive-oil/
